Discovering Hamburg’s Coolest Neighbourhoods

Hamburg. Although the very name calls to mind a busy harbour full of bustling activity, historic brick warehouses and all that, this dynamic city is so much more than a name suggests.

Move beyond the tourist traps and you’ll find a kaleidoscope of cool neighbourhoods, each with its own unique vibe, hidden treasures and oh so charming cafes. Here's your guide to unearthing Hamburg's coolest 'hoods:

Don’t forget to check airport parking deals before travelling and book accordingly.

1. St. Pauli: Where Grit Meets Glitter

St. Pauli is a paradox in an enigma.  Yes, it’s where the infamous Reeperbahn is, but there is far more to this edgy neighbourhood than it appears.  Musealized in a former police station notorious for its colourful past, explore by day the contrasting Davidwache police station.

Take a wander down buzzing Spielbudenplatz square, once the bustling heart of a now split suburbia, with its quirky theatres ranging from vaudeville to puppet shows.

2. Sternschanze (The Schanze): Bohemian Paradise

Sternschanze, or the Schanze as it’s affectionately known by locals, has an undeniable cool factor about it.  It’s become an artists’ haven, a musician’s haven, a haven for free spirits. Go to cosy vintage clothing stores and find a one of a kind treasure.

Make sure to check meet and greet parking at Manchester and book accordingly.

3. Altona: A Melting Pot of Cultures

Altona is pulsing with a great energy, which is the result of its history as a working-class district and now as a melting pot of cultures.

Go deep into Altona’s Ottensen, a cute pocket with its narrow streets and half-timbered houses.  Cafe Sternwarte offers their famous cheesecake and a cup of steaming coffee, then head over to the Altona flea market where you can spend your dollars making sure you bring home something unique.
